The photograph in this image being composed at a medium close up, showing the group 'Avenged Sevenfold', the use of the tagline/subheading stating the band name stands out against the actual main image. This also being effective at catching the Audience's attention in the shops. The main image covering up the Masthead of the magazine, the tagline being effective for that sense as well. Not only that but Kerrang! magazine use the same styled masthead every time, this also making it easier to catch the Audience's attention. The anchorage of this image being "The World's Most Dangerous Band" this also bringing in an idea of what the band may be like, for those who don't know Avenged Sevenfold. For fans of the band, they may also be interested by the anchorage, which will attract their attention to buy the magazine and read the article on the band.
The skyline on this cover being effective due to the bright yellow colour, and also the information featured on the skyline is another effective way of attracting the audience to buy the magazine. Not only that, but it gives a faint piece of information for the audience, as to what else will be featured inside this weeks magazine. Not only that, but tour dates also attract more audiences, due to the idea of going to festivals and tours as such.
The issue number, date, and barcode being obvious at the bottom of the magazine as well. The promotions at the bottom of the magazine cover also being an attraction to bring the audience in to buy the magazine, seen as the magazine is promoting some free posters of many different bands.

Kerrang! magazine.

Kerrang! magazine is a rock music magazine, which also covers other genres such a post-hardcore and also screamo music. The magazine being published by the massively well known Bauer Media Group, who also publish the magazine 'Q'.
The magazine was first published on the 6th June 1981, as a one-off secondary paper from the 'Sounds' newspaper. The name deriving from when a power chord is played on an electric guitar.
It was originally produced to focus on the new wave of British heavy metal, and the rise of new rock bands. Angus Young of AC/DC featured on Kerrang!'s first magazine cover. Kerrang! originally being released as a monthly magazine at the beginning of it's launch, it then changing to every fortnight a new magazine would be released. Then in 1987 it changed to being launched weekly.

This is a list of inspirationlal bands which mean a lot to me, a few of them being my favourite, and the rest following closely after. These bands are what my magazine is going to be molded around, the dress style, the genre style and also the use of clothing will be helpful for my photoshoot. The genre of the bands will also help when it comes to the planning and drafting of my magazine, which will help sculpt the house style and also the font style.

Glam Metal Genre

Glam metal, came around in the 1970's and also the 1980's, itself being influenced by other genres such as punk rock and pop music. Another name for this genre being hair metal, this being due to the massive hair which featured on pretty much every band member, glitter metal also being another name for the genre - this being due to the clothing.
     Music Style
When it came to the music style of glam metal, it was literally the exact same style of rock, and also metal in certain sense. Except from the fact the music features catchy hooks, and also some heavy and lengthy guitar riffs. Not only that, but glam metal can also add the odd feature from the genre of screamo - this being the odd scream in the lyrics and song every so often.
     The looks
Glam metal artists tend to also have a mass of back combed hair, which is usual also well past shoulder length. As well as the hair, the use of makeup and also the gaudy clothing which the members wear. This being bold, bright and even using sparkling glitter on certain outfits. Not to mention the use of tight clothing, spandex, headbands, and also tight denim or leather jeans. As well as the looks, the glam metal artists always tend to have a reputation. This being due to the press always following up on their nights of partying and drinking.
Well known glam metal bands -

Van Halen
Def Leppard
Poison
Twisted Sister
Mötley Crüe
Aerosmith
Alice Cooper
Scorpions
Queen
Whitesnake

Glam metal bands around now -
Steel Panther
Black Veil Brides (this band fits into screamo, rock, heavy metal and glam rock)
Buckcherry

Reckless Love
Sixx:A.M.
The Darkness

Rock Music Genre

Rock music is probably one of the most popular genres out there in the world, it's full length name when it first came around being "rock and roll" which originated in the 1950's. It then ranged into multiple different styles in the 1960's in mainly the United States of America and the United Kingdom. The genre is heavily influenced by other genres such as country music, and also the blues. It also took influences from genres such as jazz, classical and folk music. The rock genre literally being the reason as to why most other heavy genres are actually invented, and around now.
     Music Style

When it comes to rock music, the average band will consist of a drummer, a guitarist, a bassist and also a singer. The guitars tending to be electric, although some acoustics do get used when it comes to certain songs - on stage, or in rock band's albums.
     Spawn Styles

Thanks to the creation of the rock genre, many styles have originated from this. The most known being heavy metal, which is also one of the biggest genres going at the moment. Not only heavy metal, but also glam rock. No matter who you ask, everyone always knows at least one glam rock band or artist - going from David Bowie all the way to bands such as Aerosmith or Bon Jovi.
These artists actually being some of the biggest names in music history, and the present day of music. Everybody knows at least one of their songs. Thanks to these upcoming styles, even more began to emerge later on, such as punk music. This lead to punk rock, and also pop punk. Some bands from this category being Fall Out Boy, and Green Day. Two more well known bands.

      Clothing and hair
When it comes to the style of rock bands, it really does vary in many different ways. Some chose to wear very tight material pants which usually came along with flamboyant and very bold colours, with long baggy cardigan styled tops. This meant showing off most of their upper torso. A few examples of members/singers of bands who followed this style are; Axl Rose (Guns N' Roses), and also Steven Tyler (Aerosmith).
Another style of outfits would be simple, but also the same as those who were classed as being in the glam rock section. Besides from flamboyant colours, it would be a mass of makeup, huge/long hair, and also the famous leather jackets.
The audience would either also follow this style of clothing, or re-create their own. Some also wearing 'casual' clothing, which would be the classic blue jeans, boots, and also the band shirts. Most band shirts from this era only featuring the band's actual logo, no other images.

Heavy Metal Genre

Heavy metal is a genre that is commonly also known as metal is a sub-genre of rock music, which developed in the late 1960's and early 1970's - largely in the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
Heavy Metal also has roots coming from psychedelic rock, and also blues rock. This basically giving it a twist of many genres in it's own little way. When the genre came around, it was unique thanks to it's lengthy and often guitar solos, emphatic beats and it's overall loud thick sounding style. Some of the first heavy metal bands being Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and also Deep Purple which attracted large audiences instantly. These bands still being popular in modern society today, or at least the society which listens to this specific genre as well as others with similar styles. Although these bands were often feared due to their style, and more often than not, also their appearance. Even though no-one can actually beat a classic. But at the time, this style of music was shocking to listen to, feared, and often considered as violent - most people stereotyping those who did listen to that music style as vicious, dangerous and also violent.
       Lyric Themes
Black Sabbath and the other bands which brought around the heavy metal genre in music, often were considered to have lyrics of a dark persona, which focused on matters such as; depression, personal trauma, the effects of drug taking, and also loss. This may have been one of the reasons why people who did listen to this music, were often frowned upon, as well as being accused of having violent mannerisms.

       Image
When it came to the heavy metal genre, most bands were considered to have a certain memorable image about them, it's one of the keys to the success of their popularity. In addition to the instrumental style, as well as lyrics, the outfits and physical style is what made them who they are. The image was expressed by their appearance, such as tattoo sleeves, the band's logo, stage sets, clothing, makeup, hairstyles, and also their music videos. Some of the heavy metal artists such as Alice Cooper, Kiss, Lido and even Ozzy Osbourne were classed as having outrageous on set performances, as well as on stage personas. One of the most famous acts on stage being Ozzy Osbourne's stunt of biting off a bat's head.
       Makeup

Kiss were one of the first bands known to cover their faces in makeup, one member even decorating their face to look like a cat throughout their career. Although the makeup may have been used to add to their persona, it was also used to hide their actual appearance for quite some time, due to their religion not actually appreciating the glam rock/heavy metal genre. Yet, the makeup trend has continued into the new bands that we say today, such as Black Veil Brides and also Motionless in White. Though this is not to hide their identity.
      Hair
Heavy metal bands always seemed to have long hair, it was actually rare that a band didn't have that image or style about them. The long hair which ran down their back, was originally taken from the ideas of hippies. When it came to the 1980's and 1990's the heavy metal hair style was symbolic. Those who gained the style were often looked upon as hate filled and aggressive. Long hair gave the members of the heavy metal community the "power to hate against nothing at all."
      Clothing
Fashion in the heavy metal community was just as important as hair styles, and also makeup, whether it be placed on the face or around the eyes. Most of the fans who followed the genre of heavy metal stuck to wearing band shirts, black shirts, blue jeans, and the widely popular leather jacket. Some of the clothing often featuring metal studs, chains, skulls, leather and also crosses. Some of these actually being related to a mild form of S&M, this can bring in the almost sadist aspect to the genre of music. Not only that, but the appearance on stage was also important, the use of brightly coloured wild shaped instruments were often featured, this emphasising the band member's performance, and radical appearance.

Screamo Music

The screamo genre is a sub-genre of hardcore punk, as well as the heavy metal genre, as well as emo music. The genre came around in the 1990's and since then has gained popularity throughout the years. Due to the quick increase in people listening to the music, a new name was actually created for the first wave of popularity, this being skramz.
Screamo music generally uses typical rock instruments such as guitars, drums, bass - as well as featuring a brief compositions, chaotic rhythm and execution and also of course, the screaming vocals. The screamo vocals obviously giving the style of music it's name. A lot of screamo genre music does change, and they are all actually different. This being due to the fact when the singers are in fact screaming, no-one can ever match the sound to the same pitch and depth, it always has a variation with each singer. Some may have higher pitched screams, and the others may have a deeper scream.
      Image
When it comes to the image of the band members in screamo themed bands, their looks can often vary especially when it comes to the clothing, hairstyles and also makeup. Although the looks can vary, the members also seem to find a right look which expresses their style of music, and more often than not their feelings.
     Makeup
Screamo bands don't always have the image of makeup, featuring on their face or even just around their eyes. Although some bands have continued to carry on the style of glam rock, although their music may be very different from that style. One recent band which is famous for their makeup is a band going by the name of Black Veil Brides. They're famous for having simple, yet memorable makeup styles. Such as, black stitches coming from the corner of their lips, diamonds which stretch over their eyes and down their face, and also simple over exaggerated eye liner. Another band being Motionless in White, one of their members having the side of their face painted to look like a cliff side, which features a tree upon the top.
      Clothing

The clothing in the screamo genre can range from one thing to another, in today's age it's often difficult to determine who does actually listen to this genre - a lot of people often wear normal jeans or even track suit bottoms and tend to wear whatever tops they wish. But going with the theme of the fans, and sticking to the stereotypical views. Most screamo band fans, tend to wear band shirts, big boots or high top sneaker brands, skinny jeans and hoodies - sometimes the clothing may consist of having 'taboo' words featuring on it, or even violent scenes. The band members of the screamo genre roughly wearing similar styled clothing, or tight leather pants, or odd looking jackets and other items of clothing.
      Concert Performance

When it comes to the concerts performance from the audience's eyes, the usual thing to do would be to either headbang. Which consists of throwing your head back and forth, to the beat of the song. Or the "devil horns" which is a hand symbol, it's other more common name being the "rock on" hand gesture. Which is when the audience creates a fist, and then sticks out the two fingers which feature on either end of their hand.
The band members can basically do anything they want on stage, and literally do anything they want. From crowd surfing, to climbing up the railings of the stage which they're playing on.

Magazine Genre

The genre I have chosen to base my music magazine on, are a mix of sub genres, which merge into a main genre. The chosen sub-genres being screamo, heavy metal, and also rock. This can cover a wide range of bands, singers, and also clothing styles.
For example; the multiple sub-genres which merge into one can help with the ideas for the photo shoot, this meaning that when I do eventually take the photos for my magazine - I can choose outfits that will suite the style, but it can also give diversity to the outfits in which I've chosen, as well as the hair styles and the use of makeup if I do use it. As well as the outfits, the range of sub-genres will also help with the mass of bands that I can create myself, as well as ones that already exist. The use of different ranges of bands, can create a bigger audience for the magazine, in the sense that there is a band featuring in the magazine for everyone.

This is the latest 'Top 40 Download Chart' from Kerrang! magazine and also Kerrang! radio - the idea that I took the download chart from that section is due to the fact Kerrang! advertises and provides information on the genre which fits my magazine. This being an insight to what is the most popular at the moment, which can give me some great ideas which will help promote the magazine to a greater audience. For example; I could present the top 40 in my magazine - this could mean presenting it on the front cover saying about the top 40 featuring inside, or generally making the whole magazine about the chart downloads. As well as this, I could also place either My Chemical Romance, Avenged Sevenfold and also Black Veil Brides on the front cover, due to these bands being the top three. Which will gather all the fans of these bands to buy the magazine, just so they can read an article on them. Or it can work another way round, people will buy the magazine to get into these bands. That way they can keep up to date on the charts, and also the most popular bands going.

Wyke Magazine Analysis
When it came to creating my magazine, I originally planned it out on Publisher, using simple boxes, and then I made a more detailed version. After doing all of that, it then lead to me creating the real thing on Photoshop. I stuck to using a simple title for the magazine which is ‘Wyke College Magazine’, the masthead being printed diagonally across the page, in a font that is easy to read and large. The simplicity of the masthead also being easy to remember, and quite catchy in a sense. Underneath the masthead, I placed the tagline which is ‘Keeping you updated.’ The idea behind the tagline was that it was quick and easy to think of, which would also make it easy to remember, not to mention that it is slightly catchy. That way it can appeal to all students in Wyke, and possibly staff.
The main image of the magazine is a medium close up of three boys, the boy to the left of the image carrying his folder and also smiling. On stereotypical terms people would tend to think of him as the one who is always early to class, and also always hitting the high grades in each topic. In the middle there is a boy wearing an ‘OBEY’ hat, and also some beats headphones, people generally assuming he is of the mainstream genre, and kind of a slacker in a sense. Then to the right of the image shows a male in a slightly violent jacket, his hood up, and also smoking, which leads people to think he is a rather shady character. This image taking up most of the front cover besides from the white shape at the top. To explain the image I have placed a tag line underneath, stating about stereotypes and that there is a discussion going on about it. I chose this topic to appeal to the audience due to the fact, discrimination and stereotypes play a huge part in today’s modern society, it is also something that people tend to feel quite strongly about. The font of the word being in separate colours, the top line being black, the middle line being grey, and the bottom line also being black. In a way I wanted to add contrast to the cover, but without adding a mixed array of colours. So different shades of each colour sounded fine.
When it came to making the cover more realistic I added the official Wyke logo to the top of the page, and also an OFSTED logo. Not to mention a bar code in the top corner. Most people expecting to see some form of logo branding on a magazine, and also a bar code to name the price. Underneath the Wyke logo I have also placed the date of the magazine, this just being a simple thing to see on a magazine, making it look more realistic.
The image that I wanted to go for, when making this magazine was that it is suitable for everyone in the college, and exciting for everyone to read. Not to mention eye catching. Whilst doing that, I was hoping that the representation of the magazine would come across as organised, smart and also civilised. Without the magazine looking too high class in a sense.
If I had to do the magazine again, from scratch, I would possibly choose a different layout, but I would keep the masthead and tag line in the same place. Going with the idea of the ‘Z’ format reading style, where the reader begins to read from the top left of the page, then to the right, then down to the left, then to the bottom right. Making sure the reader’s eyes scan every image and piece of information on there. Also the idea of starting again would mean another topic, I would possibly base the next one on smoking, drinking, the general aspects of normal college students lives.
This is another draft that I created on Publisher, this is more of a final piece, from here I then went on to create the final magazine cover. Which I made on Photoshop.

This is the first draft of my magazine cover, which I created on Publisher.
This is the image I am going to use for my front cover, it is a medium close-up of three people in my class. The idea behind this image was of stereotypes, which is what I'm going to base my magazine on. For example, on the left is Adam, is a typical college guy who is always carrying his folder, being early to lessons and such. In the middle is Jamie, himself looking like someone who constantly wears Beats headphones, Obey caps, and mainstream clothing as such. Then to the right is Brandon, himself wearing a 'Heartless' brand jacket with the hood up, and he also has a cigarette in his mouth, this stereotyping another type of person. The idea for my magazine's main topic, is going to be a debate, about whether stereotyping people is right, or wrong.
My Prezi Initial Ideas.
Clicking on the link above, leads to my presentation on Prezi, which will explain my initial ideas in a basic form.
This collage is made up of several images of people/things that inspire me. First of all in the top left-hand corner, there is an image of Jacoby Shaddix, the singer of Papa Roach. He grew up with nothing, his family literally living off street corners - and now his band is one of the biggest in the world. He has a tattoo on his chest saying "Born with nothing, die with everything." which simply states how successful he has become. The next image is of Jake Gyllenhaal, he is up there purely for the amount of courage it must take to act in front of cameras, for the whole world to see. The next two images are of Kerrang! magazine, which doesn't really need explaining. It's just a magazine that inspires me really. The two images to the left of the page, of the four males. They are the Dudesons, some adrenaline junkies from Finland, similar to Jackass. They inspire me due to the stunts that they do, purely because, they know it's going to hurt and they may even break a bone or two. Yet they still do it. That takes some guts. Next to them are images of a Shecter [guitar] and also the Toronto skyline. Purely because I've always wanted to learn how to play guitar fully, yet I've never put in the effort. The skyline is there, due to the fact Toronto is a beautiful city. Hopefully I'll end up there one day. The next two images are of Avenged Sevenfold, because they lost their drummer several years ago, yet still carry on. Losing a close friend like that, is quite a big blow to the way they perform and the way they live. Also the image underneath that is Andy Biersack, himself being the singer of Black Veil Brides. "One of the most hated bands in the world" which is an incredible insult towards himself when his band gets listed that in several magazines, yet him and his band still carry on. All of the images are inspirational to me.

Here are two examples of camera framings. All of them showing shots such as LS, MLS, MS, MCU, CU and ECU. The top example is an image I found on the internet, whereas the bottom where I created myself using Paint.
Under neath is an image if the 'East Riding College's magazine contents page. The house style generally being black and white, besides from the green box, to the left of the page. Once again, the title of the page is stated clearly in a large basic font. This time the page is white, with a chunky black border round the edge. Then there is also several images relating to the contents of the inside, round the page. Each picture having its own black border, to make it stand out against the background, but making it also fit in with the page's border in a sense. When looking at the green box you notice the page numbers, and the contents of the magazine, which is stated in a black font. Black being the only colour they could have used, to have made the writing stand out successfully. Yet, just like the front cover. The contents page also looks incredibly boring, and not exciting, which may not want to make people read it. In order of making it look better, the editors could have make colours a little brighter on the page, or even add a pattern on the background. Just to make the page look a little more fun.
This is an example, of the East Riding College magazine. The magazine's masthead is clearly stated at the top of the page, with the date next to it. Then also the cost of the magazine. 'Student Life' being the masthead, which is printed in a simple font, the size big enough to see, making it quite eye-catching. Below that is the main image, which is not a medium close up. But also big enough to notice, showing a subtitle near the top corner of the image, stating that there is in fact an article on the inside of the magazine which explains the image. The image also having a white border at the top and the bottom of it, making it stand out against the black background. Making it more eye catching.
Near the bottom of the magazine it shows the 'East Riding College' logo nice and bold against the black. The colour of the font also making it recognisable. Then to the other corner of the magazine, it shows a list of subjects that will feature in the magazine. In a smaller font compared to the rest of the page. In a sense the black and white makes the front cover look slightly boring, and basic. Which may not actually make readers want to look at the magazine, due to the lack of excitement.

Contents page analysis.

The word ‘Contents’ is clearly placed at the top of the page, the colour scheme being a good choice as well. Yellow against a black background is an easy way to catch the viewer’s eye. Not only that but the array of photo’s placed on the page also expands the viewer’s interest in this weeks magazine. For example, the main image is a close up of a singer from Chiodos. Which then leads onto to other pictures of singers/bands placed around the outside. Around them are the page numbers, and what those pages feature, which are clearly stated with black writing on a white background, and the main titles are yellow font on a black background, which also catches the readers eye.
As well as this, this may also represent the target audience of the magazine. For example, the images of the singers, but also the ideas of the styles. Not only this, but the font may also lead to an idea of the target audience.
i.e for those who are ‘emo
’.
The layout of the contents page is all-in-all quite neat and tidy. But also quite alive and active in a sense. The amount of images which are clumped together, not to mention the page numbers and subtitles are also crammed together in another sense. Which also gives the page the messy effect as well.
