The magazine was first published on the 6th June 1981, as a one-off secondary paper from the 'Sounds' newspaper. The name deriving from when a power chord is played on an electric guitar.
It was originally produced to focus on the new wave of British heavy metal, and the rise of new rock bands. Angus Young of AC/DC featured on Kerrang!'s first magazine cover. Kerrang! originally being released as a monthly magazine at the beginning of it's launch, it then changing to every fortnight a new magazine would be released. Then in 1987 it changed to being launched weekly.
Since 1993 the magazine has been holding awards ceremonies, these being dedicated to the bands which feature in the magazine itself. The bands also being rated in the magazine by the letter 'K'. A five 'K' rating clearly being the best rating you can get.
